'India Lives in its seven hundred thousand villages' - Mahatma Gandhi


IIT Madra's Rural Technology and Business Incubator(RTBI) and National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) collaborated in November 2010 to form Namma Ooru Webiste(NOW) initiative. Indian Villages are a rich repositary of native knowledge, culture and local tradition, however only few attempts have been made to capture it. Now Initiative aims to create a global web identity for our Indian villages by empowering the rural youth to create and sustain a website for their villages. From November 2010 to October 2011 the Namma Ooru team trained 165 rural youth from Sivaganga District, they created 55 Village websites across 6 districts of Tamil Nadu. The Grand Finale of Namma Ooru Website Creation Computation was held at Central Lecture Theatre, IIT Madras from 2pm to 7pm on 17th Dec 2011.

  • Dr. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director IIT Madras gave away the Trophies to the Top 3 groups.
  • Dr. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director IIT Madras, Dr. Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Professor, IIT Madras, Chairman IITM's RTBI & Dr. Govind, CEO, NIXI awarded the Top 3 student's group the gift cheques.
  • Mr. Sarath Babu, CEO, Food King gave the Top 3 student groups certificates.
  • Smt. Sheela Rani Chunkath I. A. S., Additional Chief Secretary, CMD, Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited, Shri. K. B. Narayanan, Chief Advisor, NIXI, Shri Senthilnathan, Director, Bench Mark Group and RJ Balaji, BIG FM preside over.



  • First Prize: Rs, 75, 000 was awarded to D. Karthikk, R. Meenakshi & P. K.Madhumathi from Alagappa Chettiar College of Engineering and Technology, Karikudi they created a website for Puduvayal Village.
  • Second Prize: Rs, 50, 000 was awarded to S. Nachippan, S. Varun & S. R. Ajay Sankar from Alagappa Chettiar College of Engineering and Technology, Karikudi they created a website for Kanadukathan Village.
  • Third Prize: Rs, 25, 000 was awarded to M. Ranjani Devi, M. V. Bhuvaneshwari & A. Vijayalakshmi from Pannai College of Engineering and Technology, Sivagangai District they created a website for Iyyampalayam Village.


The Grand Finale was attended by rural youth, Panchayat Presidents and ward members and rural elders, of the respective villages, college faculty members and Principals from the student's College.
